ROM
Read only memory. Non volatile so the data is not lost when the system is turned off. It stores things such as: BIOS, programs in washing machine, program instructions for games. The data cannot be changed, and it is used so that programs/ coding/ software/ can be stored permanently/ cannot be changed.

Definitions
Hardware is a general term for the physical components that make up a computer system such as:
RAM
Processors
Motherboard
Software is a general term for the programs that control the computer system such as:
Microsoft office
Graphics drivers
Operating systems
For a computer system to be useful it has to consist of both hardware and software.
CPU (central processing unit)
The CPU is the brain of the computer, it is the device that carries out all software instructions.
CPU's usually plug into a large socket on the main circuit board (Motherboard) of a computer.
They get very hot when they are operating so usually they have a large fan attached to them to cool them.
The CPU needs to store data whilst its carrying out the processing required.
The data or instructions that are to be processed by the CPU must be placed in the main memory.
Memory can be classes as two types, RAM or ROM.

RAM
RAM stands for random access memory. It is a temporary store of data and it hold the data that is currently being used by the user. The RAM is volatile so when the computer is turned off the data that hasn't been saved is lost and unrecoverable. The code for it can be read from or written into. Also the data in RAM can be changed. RAM is needed so the users are able to make changes to the data they are working on/ to store the program or data they are currently using.
