NetworksHubs A hub connects a network of computers together, therefore when a data packet is sent from one pc for another all other machines on that network will receive that message. Switches Switches are generally more intelligent than hubs- if a message or packet wants to be sent to one machine and that machine only then the switch will determine that machine and send it there, the others don't have to see the message or packet. Router Routers connect together two or more networks commonly used in houses - a router will check a data packet and find the fastest and most efficient path to send the data down. Modem A modem converts the voice packets from the phone lines to the binary code that computers need. This is the most primitive method of internet making the phone lines a source of internet. Bridge A bridge collects data packets together and basically creates one big network - they aren't as capable as routers but are cheap - furthermore the two networks need to have the same protocol. Network cards Network cards allow wireless connection to WiFi commonly used on laptops. Almost all computers have network cards for internet. Server Servers can come in many different types - file servers network servers and database servers. Although they are computers they are usually dedicated meaning they only do server tasks. Proxy server
A proxy server is a piece of software commonly used in places like schools and work places to restrict inappropriate content or parts of the internet from the users on that network. |
